One "Big" reason to create a Flight Suit

In 1988, I was a 375 pound professional paragliding pilot and I could not find a flight suit that would fit me. I tried to get a custom made suit, but could find anyone to make it.Finally, I talked with an Italian company who made custom suits but after many attempts, I was told it would be too complicated to make and besides they didn't really want a pilot of my size wearing one of their suits. So I decided to make my own. I drew out a design and took it to a seamstress. I gave her all the details which include many of the features still used today.

A Brand is Born

I began selling the flight suits I designed when a friend saw me wearing mine and wanted one just like it. Soon another friend asked, then another and I was on my way to selling my unique design. I wanted to sell my flight suits internationally, however I was told by a Swiss Instructor (who was my business partner) that no one was going to buy a flight suit from Peru. He thought that I was crazy. I then told him that the Peruvian clothing tradition has thousands of years of history. Scientists all over the world are amazed by the quality of the Paracas mantos. These hand woven blankets used in pre-Inca religious ceremonies have lasted more than 2000 years and have held their colors and beauty till today. Peru is also well known for producing many of the name brands of active clothing. If there is something that is recognized in my country, it is the quality of our fabrics and our manufacturing. A short time later, I founded and named my flying school and flight suit Perufly. The Peru name in the forefront and not in a little tag hidden in the neck.

Why so many features?

Some of the features you will find in our flight suits are the results of hundreds of hours of flight in a variety of conditions. We invented the stretch back because a flight suit can become very uncomfortable when you bend or sit in the harness. The ancient Peruvians were masters of design and it inspired my design of our logo to incorporate the Nasca Lines in our products. For Peruvians, time is not about money. They take all the time they need to build flight suits in the same way their ancestors crafted their arwork. As a result, our products require a consuming amout of time to build. We build the very best even if it is expensive to produce.

Two opportunities breed one great result

Mike

I was on a flying trip with a friend and Mike Haley in the late 90's in the Andes. While we were in the top of the mysterious and magical Macchu Picchu, he told me that he thought the Perufly suit was a great product. He really loved my flight suit and wanted to give me a hand with selling them in North America. That opened the door for me and soon all of his flying friends wanted to buy them. Mike married Gail years later, who is also a pilot. She took over selling and soon it started appearing all over the continent. She took really good care of the brand, creating strong loyalty with our dealers and customers by providing quality service and a healthy business environment. Our customer care is simply the best you can get and we owe that to Gail.

Patrick

A few months after I met Mike, I met Patrick Blum from Lanion France. We became great friends after a midnight new year's eve, flying in my hot air balloon above the Peruvian desert in Paracas. We did not discuss business that night as we were busy eating foie gras and drinking champagne. The next morning, he decided to be our European distributor and the next door was opened. Nowadays he is doing a great job with the always smiling Paulita supporting him.

Katia and Gail

Years later, I married my beautiful wife Katia, who is also a pilot. Soon she began taking over the production and improving the designs with Gail. They both have kept the same philosophy for a quality product so I now rely on these two pilots to do a better job than I did.

Loosing Ballast

I had a surgery in 1999, its called the Gastric band. This surgery will reduce the amount of food you can eat. It took me two years to lose the 200 extra pounds (I had 390 at that point).

Nowadays

In the end of the summer of the 2004 our companies merged and Perufly became a registered brand from MPH Sports. Mike and I are the test pilots for our wife's creations and improvements.

Last words

I weigh 190 pounds today, and I will pledge to you that even if you weigh 500, we will always be happy to make a custom flight suit for you. Thanks for supporting our products, they are designed and built with love. Our suits are trully designed by pilots for pilots.
